silly question

I’ve been thinking of ditching my good-paying but stressful teaching job for my very interesting 3$/hr freelance work. Does this count?

Haha. Not really. I will keep my job as long as possible. But the funny thing is, there’s really a website where you could ask such questions. DoesThisCount is a website that allows you to ask this century-old question “Does this count?” Of course, you’ll get answers and votes if your question really counts or not. You’ll get comments too which may spark an interesting debate. Check out DoesThisCount on FaceBook or better yet, check out the site and see how it works. It’s fun!

when driving

It is never a secret that I am not good with driving. When I am driving, I use up like 95% of my brain capacity. I really need to concentrate to avoid getting in to an accident or getting a loud horn from fellow drivers (they can be really rude that I am always tempted to show them my long, lovely and fragile looking middle finger).

I do wear my contact lenses when I drive although I also own a suitable pair of glasses. I am not vain, I just feel more comfortable with the lenses but I have one problem with wearing lenses. When one lens (or both) dries up, my vision immediately blurs. This occurred to me many times during the winter. It was really cold so I always turn my car heating to maximum. The first time it happened to me, I immediately pulled over. Of course, I got a few horns but I didn’t care. For the succeeding times, I blink first but when blinking doesn’t work, I open my windows.

A wide clear view when driving is for me, very vital. Eyeglasses are cool when I am reading or when I am doing something in front of my PC but the fact that I can see the rims bothers me. Too meticulous? Well, if I can only drive with shoes other than my old brown sneakers, I might disagree with that.

saving energy and money

We finally found our dream house! It has 100 square meters living area plus 50 square meter basement. We bought it in a “Belagsfertig” state. That means, the inside finishing still needs to be done. Before we moved in two weeks ago, only the basics (heating, electrical wiring, floors, painting, doors, toilets, and water pipes) were done.

we're done with the kitchen

I am glad that this week, we can count the kitchen and the bathroom as done as well. We have a lot of plans for the house and we are planning everything carefully. Sure, we want a lot of fancy things for the house but the most important consideration we have is; the house’s energy consumption should be as low as possible.

Before buying a house, we read as much as we can about home energy and how we can save money. One very helpful site is Microsoft-HOHM.com. This website offers a lot of information about home energy consumption. If you register and put in a few information about your house, like when was it built, what type of heating system does it have, and a few other details, this site can calculate your energy usage and calculate how much you can save. This website also gives you very good recommendations on how you can reduce your energy usage. We really got a lot of helpful information from this site and we are trying to follow their recommendations as we put our house together. Registration is completely free so you can check their free services anytime.

We believe in living green and saving energy is one way to show that. When we decided to buy a house, we made sure that the one we are getting is a “low energy house”. That means, the windows and the walls are built so that we don’t need to use excessive heating during the cold season. It is costing us a lot of money now but we believe that in the long run, we will save more than what we spent.

We also see to it that the home appliances we are buying are energy saving appliances. The washing machine and the dishwasher for example, have the “eco” feature. You just have to load them, put in some details, and they will calculate the weight of the load, the washing soap, the water, and the running time. This is much better than the traditional electrical appliances which only run in uniform programs—it doesn’t matter if you are washing 7 kilos load or or just 2 kilos load because they will always use the same amount of water and the same amount of energy.

For lighting, we use LED lights and bulbs that last longer and use lesser electrical energy.

There are still so many ways we can save energy and we try to follow these strictly because energy saved is money saved.

our kitchen arrived yesterday

We ordered it seven weeks ago from KIKA. KIKA is one of the biggest upper end furniture superstores in Austria. The others are LINER and LUTZ. We also have IKEA here in Graz and they have some kitchens at cheaper prices but we wanted something really good for our kitchen—something that could last for decades so we went all out for it.

KIKA's delivery truck

The truck came at around 9:00am yesterday.

This is our living room

These are just half ofthe things unloaded from the truck. They took all the space of our living room. Glad that the living room furniture are not yet there. Waahh! It’s such a big mess!

our kitchen slowly being mounted

The workers said they’ll be done mounting the kitchen in two days.

a day's work

This is what they finished yesterday. I really hope they’ll finish everything today because I am very excited to use it!  And oh, by the way the floating ceiling was my idea. We had it made by professional but the design was from hubby. The cool lights were his ideas and design too.

transporting our things

At the end of February, we made the “big move”. I’d say that this is the biggest move ever because our destination is a place we own and where we plan to stay for the rest of our lives. We did some moving already. The first one was from one city to another city (Changchun to Shanghai) and the second one was from one country to another country. Moving from Shanghai, China to Graz, Austria was a lot of work but not as much as moving from Graz to the suburbs of Graz. Why? It is because all the apartments we moved into prior to our third and final move were all “well furnished”. We didn’t have to worry about things we might need. We just have to bring in a few stuff and that’s it.

But this time it’s different. We have to move a lot of accumulated stuff we deposited in my in-laws basement. We left them there because we didn’t need them in our furnished apartment. First, we thought about getting truck rentals to move our things but they’re quite expensive. I tried to look for cheaper means to transport our things on the net but the thing is when you are living in a non-English speaking country, most of the websites are not in English too. So my computer, which is set in English, is directing my searches to websites like Upack.com. I’ve learned from their website the benefits of using a Upack.

Contrary to old notions, you get better value of your money with Upack than with truck rentals. The prices offered are quite similar but Upack services are more impressive. With Upack, you don’t have to worry about things like fuel price, sales tax and insurance because everything is included in the price. With truck rentals, you pay for the whole truck whether you use up the all the space or not. With Upack, you only pay for the trailer space you use. And the best thing is, you don’t have to worry about driving it because somebody will do that for you. Isn’t that great?

I wish we have something like that here in Austria.

dreaming time

Back when I didn’t have a job, I was so annoyed that I was just at home all the time. I always complained about it. Now that I have a job, I miss the times that I am just at home. Sigh* Contentment is really elusive.

If I would be given the chance to stay at home and earn money without doing anything, will I be happy? I think not. Because there’s that certain joy I get from teaching (I am a teacher). I will definitely miss that if I were just to stay at home (or do other jobs for that matter).

But what I want (wish) is to be able to work less but earn twice as much as I am earning now. Haha. Very ambitious, yes, but I am in the “dreaming mood” right now. I would still like to be able to teach/work but I would also like to have the time for other things. Like blogging, gardening, cross-stitching, learning how to cook, sketching, reading, and being creative in general. I still get to read and blog sometimes but that’s it. I would like to explore the craft of gardening, book scrapping, digital scrapping, etc but I don’t have the luxury of time for these things anymore.

I’ll find time…maybe during the summer break… or maybe I should quit my job. Yaiks! Nah, I wouldn’t like to have that “jobless” feeling again.
